Abstract

This article reviews a recording featuring Josef Spacek and the Prague Radio Symphony under Petr Popelka performing two violin concertos by Bohuslav Martinů and Igor Stravinsky’s Divertimento for violin and piano. It highlights Martinů’s Violin Concerto No. 2, composed for virtuoso Mischa Elman and premiered in 1943, as a richly tuneful and well-crafted work delivered here with expressive pacing and clarity. The less frequently performed Violin Concerto No. 1, with a complex history of delayed premiere, is described as more avant-garde and percussive, yet performed with precision. The inclusion of Stravinsky’s Divertimento, transcribed with violinist Samuel Dushkin from his 1928 ballet The Fairy’s Kiss, provides a contrasting, intimate interlude on violin and piano.
