Abstract

Notwithstanding the book's subtitle, Katherine Boyle, Lady Ranelagh (1615-91) was, as Michelle DiMeo reminds us in this first book-length biography of her, so much more than merely a sibling to the famous scientist, basking in his reflected glory. Ranelagh practiced an "open-minded approach to medicine" (p. 76) based on her conviction that God had hidden many secrets in nature and thus, a simple herb could be more effective that the latest complicated chemical procedure.
