Abstract

This article examines the fan-created folklore surrounding the Japanese role-playing game Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix, 1997) and its role in shaping emotional connections and nostalgia within the gaming community. It presents Final Fantasy VII fan folklore as a blend of official game materials, developer secrets, and player-discovered rumors circulated through oral traditions both offline and online. The study analyzes how this folklore was leveraged by Square Enix in promoting the 2020 Final Fantasy VII Remake, particularly through a narrative-driven commercial that evokes collective memory and nostalgia, described using Raymond Williams's concept of "structures of feeling." The article highlights the significance of fan folklore in sustaining the game's legacy and fostering communal identity, suggesting broader implications for folklore studies in digital and popular culture contexts.
