Abstract

The article re-examines how U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan orchestrated the case Shapiro v. Thompson, wherein the court invalidated state durational residency requirements for receipt of public assistance and helped established a constitutional right to travel, in the last days of the Warren Court. Topics discussed include right to receive welfare benefits, validity of the Connecticut residency requirement law, and violation of Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses.
