Abstract

The article discusses the New York Supreme Court case Knight v. Clossey dealing with slavery. The jury awarded Knight six pence in money damages and six pence for court costs, but the legal rights of the parties, and Knight then became free under the New York statute of 1788 prohibiting the importation of enslaved people into the state for sale.
