Abstract
Adam Mestyan's book, "Modern Arab Kingship: Remaking the Ottoman Political Order in the Interwar Middle East," explores the recycling of empire in the twentieth-century Middle East. Mestyan focuses on the concept of political order and how Islam and monarchy became reattached after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The book challenges the idea that the Mandate period introduced a European political order to the Middle East and instead examines how local actors reworked Ottoman political institutions in response to political challenges. Mestyan's analysis includes discussions on genealogical politics, the transformation of the Ottoman Empire, and the recycling of the Ottoman order in various Middle Eastern states. The book offers a complex and comprehensive exploration of the topic and may appeal to social scientists and historians interested in the region and the legacy of empire. [Extracted from the article]
