Abstract
This work examines the evolving reputation of Marshal Philippe Pétain in French public opinion from his 1945 trial for treason through to the present day. It details Pétain's role as head of the French State during the German Occupation, his conviction, and imprisonment, while highlighting aspects of his 1945 trial such as the absence of women and Holocaust survivors among participants. The book explores the polarized public attitudes toward Pétain over decades, including the persistence of devoted supporters and the later acknowledgment of French complicity in the Holocaust. It also notes the fading public memory of Pétain today, with limited official recognition or commemoration, situating him as a continuing focal point in discussions about France's wartime history.
