Abstract
This article focuses on the development and early implementation of the barcode system at Sainsbury's supermarket in the early 1970s. Faced with challenges in inventory management and stock replenishment, Sainsbury's collaborated with the Plessey company to create a reliable, error-free data capture method using barcodes, which allowed daily shelf stock assessments to be transmitted automatically to head office. Initial trials demonstrated the system’s effectiveness in reducing out-of-stock items and optimizing stock levels, despite early technical challenges such as power supply and data transmission issues. By 1972, the barcode system was operational in multiple stores and eventually expanded company-wide, marking a significant advancement in retail logistics that continues to influence product identification globally.
