Abstract

This article reviews a comprehensive excavation report on Cladh Hallan, a machar site on South Uist in the Western Isles, notable for its Bronze Age roundhouses and unique composite 'mummy' burials created from parts of multiple individuals. While the burials have attracted media attention, the report emphasizes the broader significance of the site's exceptional preservation and innovative excavation methods, which have revealed an unparalleled settlement sequence from the Beaker period through the 4th or 3rd centuries BCE. The volume details 16 phases of activity, including early iron use and unusual findings such as copious dog coprolites, and highlights the meticulous archaeological techniques employed. This publication is Part 1 of a two-part series, focusing on excavation results and specialist analyses, with further interpretation and scientific data to follow. The report is intended for readers interested in detailed archaeological methodology and prehistoric lifeways, supplemented by a digital app that enhances public engagement with the site.
