Abstract
The article examines how former President Donald Trump's portrayal of asylum seekers as dangerous echoes longstanding, often false narratives rooted in the 1980s Mariel boatlift, a mass migration of Cuban refugees to the United States. During the Mariel boatlift, the Cuban government expelled individuals labeled as "undesirables," including some with criminal records and mental health conditions, which was amplified by U.S. media to depict the refugees negatively. This portrayal influenced U.S. immigration politics, contributing to punitive policies and shaping responses to later migration crises, such as the 1994 Cuban rafter crisis. The article highlights how the Mariel narrative continues to be used in contemporary anti-immigrant rhetoric, despite the Marielitos' significant contributions to American society and the injustices they faced.
