Abstract
The article examines the evolving concept of the workweek in the UK, focusing on the increasing acceptance of a four-day workweek. It highlights the recent occurrence of three bank holidays in May 2023, which effectively created extended weekends without reducing productivity. The piece traces the historical origins of UK bank holidays to 19th-century legislation introduced by John Lubbock, initially intended to allow banks legal days off, which later expanded to other workers. It also discusses how post-COVID work arrangements and trials by the UK’s 4 Day Week Campaign, where most participating companies chose to continue shorter workweeks citing reduced burnout and sick days, support the feasibility of a reduced workweek becoming standard.
