Abstract

The article focuses on the exhibition "Manet & Morisot" at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, which explores the artistic relationship between French painters Édouard Manet and Berthe Morisot. It highlights how Morisot, despite being less recognized, influenced Manet's later works, particularly in their shared themes and stylistic choices. The exhibition presents a comparative analysis of their paintings, revealing how Manet's style evolved to resemble Morisot's more intimate and atmospheric approach as he faced health challenges. The article also addresses the structural sexism that affected Morisot's recognition as a serious artist, contrasting her more subtle works with Manet's bolder canvases. The exhibition will travel to the Cleveland Museum of Art from March to July 2026. [Extracted from the article]
