Abstract

The article focuses on the current challenges facing NATO, arguing that the alliance has become a "zombie" organization lacking the vital U.S. commitment to collective defense under Article 5 of its founding charter. It highlights how U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticisms, threats, and policy shifts—exemplified by the Greenland crisis and controversial peace proposals—have undermined trust and exposed NATO’s vulnerabilities. While NATO showed resilience under President Joe Biden, the article contends that Europe must take greater ownership of its defense capabilities to ensure the alliance’s survival and autonomy. Without significant European investment and political will, NATO risks collapse if tested by future crises involving either U.S. withdrawal or Russian aggression. [Extracted from the article]
