Abstract

The fall and winter of 2023 saw a series of historic events, including a devastating Hamas attack on Israeli villages, resulting in nearly 1,200 Israeli deaths and the capture of 240 hostages, followed by Israel’s large-scale military retaliation that, by early 2024, claimed over 30,000 Palestinian lives. This collection of notes and journal entries, written during the initial months of the conflict, reflects the author's personal perspective as a historian of US–Middle East relations, shaped by the cultural and political movements of the 1980s. The entries juxtapose the past and present, weaving together histories of activism, art, war, and memory.
