Abstract

Edward 'Mick' Mannock, a young Irishman, became the first recipient of the Victoria Cross in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War I. Despite being a rookie pilot and facing discrimination for his working-class background, Mannock achieved 61 aerial victories, including shooting down enemy observation balloons. He overcame initial challenges and gained respect as a skilled pilot, training other pilots and leading successful missions. Mannock tragically died in a plane crash, but his bravery and contributions to the RAF are remembered and honored. [Extracted from the article]
