Abstract

Russia plans to deploy new weapons on the Kuril Islands, which are at the center of a territorial dispute with Japan. Former President Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently the deputy head of Russia's Security Council, made the announcement. The dispute over the islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan, has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty to formally end World War II. Russia has been building up military installations on the islands in recent years, and changes to the Russian constitution have made it illegal to give up any part of Russian territory.
