Abstract
Initiative in the political transformation of France has been conceded to Richelieu, and Mazarin's ministry can seem like a weak sequel whose main actions had been prefigured by his illustrious predecessor. Characteristically, the process reveals Mazarin's reforms as significantly concerned to facilitate the economic and political exploitation of the monastic orders, whether for Mazarin himself or his political allies. Loskoutoff focuses on Mazarin's links with the Jesuits, evidenced through his secret agent, François Duneau SJ, stressing the mutual admiration between Mazarin and the Society of Jesus.
