Abstract

The article focuses on Richard Price's contributions to statistics and his role in the publication of Thomas Bayes's work, which later became known as Bayes's theorem. In December 1763, Price submitted Bayes's manuscript to the Royal Society, which led to its publication in 1764, although it initially received little attention. Price's introduction and appendix to the manuscript highlighted the significance of Bayes's work in the context of probability and inductive reasoning, particularly in relation to philosophical debates about miracles, notably those posed by David Hume. The article also discusses Price's motivations for promoting Bayes's work and his own applications of Bayesian reasoning in addressing Hume's arguments. [Extracted from the article]
