Abstract

McGill University and Concordia University in Montreal are taking legal action against the Quebec government over a tuition fee increase for Canadian students from other provinces. Last year, Quebec announced a nearly doubling of tuition fees to $17,000 for out-of-province students studying at English-language universities in the French-speaking province. The decision, made to protect the French language, has caused outrage in Montreal's anglophone community and business sector. McGill University is seeking to reverse the hike, arguing that it is discriminatory under both Canadian and Quebec charters of rights and freedoms. [Extracted from the article]
