Abstract

The article examines the resurgence of military coups in Africa from 2020 to 2023 and their implications for the African Union's (AU) vision, particularly Agenda 2063, which aims for a peaceful, secure, and democratically governed continent. Despite the AU's normative frameworks—such as the Constitutive Act, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), and the African Governance Architecture (AGA)—and its policy of condemning coups and suspending unconstitutional regimes, recent coups in countries like Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Gabon challenge the effectiveness of these measures. The study highlights that military takeovers often arise from governance failures, insecurity, and socio-economic crises, complicating the AU's efforts to "Silence the Guns" and achieve sustainable development and regional integration under Agenda 2063. It concludes that while the AU's commitment to democratic governance remains appropriate, the organization must strengthen its frameworks and adopt more nuanced, proactive approaches to address the underlying causes of coups and enhance political stability across Africa.
