Abstract

This article analyzes the impact of cyclones in Bangladesh over the past five decades, focusing on five major cyclones. It finds that Bangladesh has successfully reduced human casualties by over 99% during cyclone Sidr compared to cyclone Bhola, attributing this success to improved early warning systems, cyclone preparedness programs, construction of cyclone shelters, and afforestation programs. The findings can inform disaster management plans and strategies in Bangladesh and other countries. The article also provides information on the death toll and impact of decadal cyclones in Bangladesh, highlighting the importance of cyclone warning systems and volunteer activities in reducing the human toll. It discusses the efforts made by the Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) in Bangladesh to reduce the impact of cyclones and protect vulnerable populations, emphasizing the effectiveness of timely and proper cyclone warnings. The article presents Bangladesh as a role model for cyclonic disaster management and emphasizes the importance of early warning systems, community-based initiatives, and infrastructure development in reducing the human toll of cyclones. The document is a list of references and sources related to cyclones in Bangladesh, providing a comprehensive overview of the topic for researchers. The article from the European edition of Stars and Stripes discusses the devastating cyclone that hit East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1970, highlighting the destruction, loss of lives, and recovery efforts.
