Abstract
This article examines how contemporary Latin American urban inequality and violence are represented through cinema, focusing on two independent films: Mexico's *Nuevo orden* (2020) by Michel Franco and Brazil's *Era uma vez Brasília* (2017) by Adirley Queirós. Both films blend realist techniques with dystopian and science fiction elements to explore racialized economic disparities in their capital cities, yet they diverge ideologically—*Nuevo orden* presents an anti-utopian view that condemns social upheaval as chaotic and destructive, while *Era uma vez Brasília* maintains a pessimistic but utopian call for political resistance and collective action. The article situates these films within the broader historical and cultural context of Latin American urban development, highlighting cinema's role in visualizing the city as a contested space shaped by social hierarchies, exclusion, and authoritarianism.
