Abstract

The article focuses on the ongoing water crisis of the Colorado River, a vital water source spanning seven U.S. states and Mexico, which no longer reaches its delta due to overallocation, prolonged drought, and climate change. The century-old Colorado Compact, governing water distribution, expires this year amid disputes between upper- and lower-basin states, complicating efforts to address declining reservoir levels at Lake Powell and Lake Mead. Despite the river’s critical role in supporting millions of people, agriculture, and ecosystems, competing demands and outdated management have led to severe shortages, with Native communities often overlooked. The author advocates for collaborative, basin-wide solutions inspired by past cooperative river trips to sustain the river’s future. [Extracted from the article]
