Abstract

The Western neighbors of the Baltics followed the Vikings' pattern by evolving over centuries from raiders to traders. However, Russia, to the East, did not evolve, and its persistent raiding policies had a persistent negative effect on the Baltics. Since regaining independence from the USSR, the Baltic economies have grown rapidly relative to Russia. Lithuanian income per capita has risen from near equality with Russia in 1990 to nearly 50% higher in 2022. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
