Abstract

The article focuses on the reassessment of French Impressionism in light of the 150th anniversary of the 1874 Société anonyme des peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs, etc. exhibition, highlighting two recent books on Claude Monet. André Dombrowski's "Monet's Minutes" examines the relationship between Monet's painting techniques and contemporary scientific advancements in time measurement, arguing that Monet's work reflects a deliberate engagement with temporality rather than a mere quickness. In contrast, Harmon Siegel's "Painting with Monet" emphasizes the importance of community and collaboration among Monet and his contemporaries, exploring how their interactions shaped their artistic perspectives. Both works contribute to ongoing discussions about the definition and future directions of Impressionism studies. [Extracted from the article]
