Abstract

The growing energy insufficiency problem has several nations looking into alternative fuel sources. The possibility of using environmentally friendly biodiesel, primarily from waste sources, as a substitute for fossil fuels is growing. Using Bismuth (III) oxide (Bi2O3 ) nanoparticles, this study examines the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine running on Mahua and diesel. For the experiments, a single-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine operating at a constant speed and under different loads was employed. This paper discusses a novel approach to increasing efficiency by employing nanoparticles to enhance combustion and reduce fuel consumption. Analysing the potential impacts of mixing nanoparticles with diesel and Mahua biodiesel is the aim of this study. According to experimental findings, the biodiesel blend’s brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased when B20-Bi2O3 was added, whereas diesel fuel’s BTE decreased. Blends of biodiesel decreased NOx emissions more than blends of B20-Bi2O3 nanoparticles. Additionally, compared to B20, the B20-BaO (100 ppm) mix resulted in a 25.63% reduction in smoke opacity, a 26.12% reduction in hydrocarbon (HC) emissions, a 28.71% reduction in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, and a small 22.37% reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions.
