Abstract

The article focuses on how film adaptations of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel *Wuthering Heights* often omit key themes of abuse and revenge central to the original work, instead emphasizing a romantic narrative. While the novel portrays a multigenerational cycle of violence involving Heathcliff's abusive actions toward multiple characters, including children, most adaptations—including the upcoming 2026 film by Emerald Fennell—focus primarily on the first half of the book and the destructive relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy. This selective portrayal alters the novel's complex exploration of toxic relationships and cycles of abuse, presenting a softened version that aligns more with a conventional love story.
