Abstract
This article discusses landscape architect Sara Zewde and her innovative approach to understanding and reshaping the American landscape. Zewde retraces the journeys of Frederick Law Olmsted, a prominent figure in landscape architecture, to gain a deeper understanding of how slavery shaped the cultural landscape of the 19th century. Through her firsthand encounters with these landscapes, Zewde empowers new voices to challenge and rewrite a more inclusive view of history. Her current work, including the redesign of Dia Beacon's grounds in upstate New York, showcases her fresh voice and aesthetic, challenging the homogeneous legacy of landscape architecture and demonstrating the potential for new models in the 21st century.
