From Where Do We Draw Breath? Air's Absence and Blackness.

Abstract

The article argues that airlessness and breathlessness structure the unfolding of Blackness and African American existence in an anti-African American world. Topics discussed are economic hierarchy of transatlantic slavery that supported a political and social order, violent mechanisms and techniques through which captured Africans were treated as slaves, Africans cast as stowaways with unsanctioned and unlawful mobility, and subsumption of African American stowaways in capitalism for survival.
