Abstract

In driving the recognition of the GDR in sports, Olympic sport precipitated a form of sporting détente. During the 1950s and 1960s, the leaders of the fledgling German Democratic Republic (GDR), the communist state created in the aftermath of World War II in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany, invested heavily in high performance sport as a strategy of international recognition. When the GDR erected the Berlin Wall in 1961, the tripartite Allied Travel Office (ATO) and the NATO countries intensified their restrictions against GDR citizens, especially athletes.
