Abstract
This article critically examines the Horatio Alger myth, revealing it as a fabricated narrative that misrepresents Alger’s actual life and accomplishments, and challenges its use as a symbol of guaranteed upward mobility in America. It highlights recent political controversies involving Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and undisclosed gifts linked to the Horatio Alger Association, an organization celebrating success from modest origins. While debunking the Alger myth, the article affirms that the American Dream remains viable through hard work, ambition, and community support, citing immigrant-founded companies and contemporary business leaders as evidence. It calls for moving beyond fictionalized success stories to recognize authentic examples of achievement in American society.
