Abstract
The more than four decades-long diplomatic dispute over the final disposition of the provinces of Tacna (in Peru) and Arica became for Peru the moral equivalent of Alsace-Lorraine. The War of the Pacific (1879-83) and its extended aftermath have cast a long shadow over Chilean-Peruvian relations. Moreover, Peru had a longstanding territorial conflict in the twentieth century with Ecuador, fighting a full-scale war in 1941 with further military clashes in 1981 and 1995.
