Abstract

The article focuses on the paintings "Jean Monet Sleeping" and "The Cradle, Camille with the Artist's Son Jean," by Claude Monet, and argues that portraits such as these portray modernity though an indication of hygiene awareness and progressive medical knowledge. The author discusses the use of a bassinet in the paintings, the medicalisation and surveillance of babies sleeping in the 19th century, and the possibility that the painting shows the baby having a bad dream.
