Abstract
This article focuses on research from Tamil Nadu, India, investigating the effects of the probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) on depression-like symptoms induced by reserpine in adult zebrafish. Reserpine, an antihypertensive drug known to cause neurotoxicity, was used to induce behavioral deficits, oxidative stress, neuronal damage, and neuroinflammation. Treatment with EcN significantly improved behavioral outcomes, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, showing effects comparable to the antidepressant Venlafaxine. The study suggests EcN as a promising psychobiotic with potential antidepressant-like properties, recommending further research into its mechanisms and clinical applications.
