Abstract

This article focuses on the life and legacy of Francis Pegahmagabow, an Indigenous soldier from the Wasauksing First Nation who served with distinction in the First World War. Despite facing systemic discrimination, he enlisted with the 23rd Northern Pioneers and fought in major battles such as Ypres and Passchendaele, earning the Military Medal and two bars for repeated acts of bravery. After the war, Pegahmagabow became a community leader, serving as Chief and councillor of Wasauksing First Nation, advocating for Indigenous rights and preserving Ojibwe cultural knowledge. He is nationally recognized by Parks Canada as a National Historic Person and by Veterans Affairs Canada for his significant contributions as an Indigenous veteran and leader.
