Abstract
This article provides a historical account of the William A. Rochelle High School music program in Lakeland, Florida, a segregated all-Black high school that operated from 1928 to 1969. It details the development and significance of Rochelle's band and chorus programs from 1949 until the school's closure, highlighting their ties to Florida historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), community support, and the dedication of music educators and students. The music ensembles participated in local and regional festivals, parades, and competitions, fostering pride and discipline within Lakeland's Black community amid the challenges of segregation. The article draws on interviews, yearbooks, newspapers, and archival materials to illuminate the musical contributions of Rochelle and its alumni, while also suggesting avenues for future research on segregated Black music education and its legacy.
