Abstract

The article examines the involvement of German trade unions in Jean Monnet's Action Committee for the United States of Europe, highlighting their motivations, limited influence during the Rome Treaties negotiations, and ongoing engagement within the Committee. Topics include the unions' pursuit of a ‘social Europe', the role of nuclear power in shaping their participation; and the constraints posed by national political dynamics and domestic priorities.
