Abstract

The article focuses on Florent Nikéma's recent performance in Pina Bausch's Rite of Spring during a North American tour and his subsequent interview about his career and experience with African-based contemporary dance following a master workshop at York University's Department of Dance. It highlights Nikéma's engagement with African contemporary and West African dance vernacular within the context of ballet and artistic process. The article also provides background on Collette "Coco" Murray, a dance artist-scholar and cultural arts programmer based in Toronto, who conducted the interview and is noted for her work in Afro-diasporic dance education and anti-racist pedagogies. Murray's contributions include founding the Coco Collective, promoting African and Caribbean arts, and advocating for Black arts through community engagement and research.
