Abstract
The article discusses the History Lives On exhibit, which focuses on preserving Alabama's Rosenwald Schools. The exhibit provides information on the history and legacy of Rosenwald Schools, from their establishment during segregation to ongoing efforts to preserve the remaining structures. It features 3-D printed models of schools, furniture and other materials on loan from the Mt. Sinai Community Center, and artifacts and documents from the Alabama Department of Archives and History's collection. The exhibit highlights the partnership between the ADAH and Auburn University's College of Architecture, Design & Construction, which has been working to document and digitally preserve Rosenwald Schools. The article also mentions the success of the Rosenwald school construction program, which used matching grants to build over 5,000 schoolhouses, teacher homes, and industrial education shops, with over 400 of these buildings located in Alabama. Despite some losses, some of the remaining Rosenwald Schools have been repurposed as community centers, church buildings, and museums. Efforts to preserve these structures have been undertaken by various organizations and community groups. The History Lives On exhibit will be on view at the Alabama Department of Archives and History until August 31, 2024. [Extracted from the article]
