First known double gravitational lens could shed light on universe's expansion.

Abstract

Astronomers have discovered the first known double gravitational lens, created by two perfectly aligned galaxies that act as a compound lens, bending light and magnifying a distant quasar behind them. This unique cosmic alignment will allow for accurate readings of the universe's expansion rate, known as the Hubble constant, shedding light on the consistency of the cosmological model. By studying the light paths and time delays of the lensed quasar, researchers hope to calculate both the Hubble constant and a parameter related to dark energy, providing valuable insights into cosmological theory.
