Abstract
The article focuses on research from the University of Ottawa addressing the problem of derogatory speech through the lens of Garrett Hardin's "tragedy of the commons," a collective action problem where individual benefits come at a shared cost. The study argues that a healthy communicative environment is a collective resource essential for satisfying various interests, and that derogatory speech threatens the psychological conditions necessary for effective communication. It concludes by recommending coercive and educational measures to protect these psychological resources. The research has been peer-reviewed and is detailed in the journal Topoi.
