Abstract

The article focuses on a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck off Japan's southern coast near Kyushu, prompting a tsunami advisory and causing nine mostly minor injuries. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) detected tsunami waves up to 50 centimeters and issued warnings for Miyazaki prefecture's coastline, while lifting advisories elsewhere. Seismologists highlighted an increased probability of a major earthquake from the nearby Nankai Trough within the next 30 years, urging residents to review preparedness despite no immediate threat. Damage included broken windows at Miyazaki airport and structural impacts in Kagoshima, but all nuclear reactors in the region remained safe. Officials continue to monitor aftershocks and assess the situation.
