Abstract
The article looks back at the general strike in Seattle, Washington in 1919 as thousands of shipyard workers demanded a wage increase to show how organized citizens can stop the machinery of government and commerce amid the power of the government and multinational corporations. It considers civil rights activism, nonviolent civil disobedience, strike, boycott, and the refusal of people to serve as weapons against state or corporate power.
