Abstract
The article reviews three scholarly works focused on Mexican American civil rights and cultural activism. Cynthia E. Orozco’s book, *Alonso S. Perales: Pioneer of Mexican-American Civil Rights*, explores the life of Perales, his role in founding and shaping the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and his multifaceted career as an activist, attorney, veteran, and diplomat. The book provides detailed historical context on early Mexican American civil rights organizing in South Texas and offers insights into Perales’s private life and legacy. Additionally, Martha Gonzalez’s *Chican@ Artivistas* examines the political and cultural impact of Chican@ popular music in East Los Angeles, highlighting connections to the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico, and emphasizing community-based artistic practices. Both works contribute to understanding the complexities of Mexican American activism and cultural expression in the twentieth century.
