Abstract

The main focus of this work is the early life and literary identity formation of the French writer Colette, examined up to 1923 when she adopted the singular pen name "Colette." The study reconstructs her trajectory through a unique chronological approach, emphasizing the significance of onomastics—the study of names—and how Colette’s use of various diminutives and pseudonyms shaped both her real and fictional existence. It situates her development within the cultural and feminist contexts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, highlighting the interplay of innovation and tradition in her identity. The analysis integrates biographical facts with literary interpretation to reveal how Colette’s evolving self-positioning laid the groundwork for her later mature career and enduring place in literary history.
