Abstract
The article focuses on Theater Magdeburg’s presentation of the German premiere of Irish composer Gerald Barry’s opera *Alice’s Adventures Underground*, directed by Swiss general director Julien Chavaz. The production exemplifies Theater Magdeburg’s commitment to experimental and contemporary opera, blending opera, ballet, and theatre in a fluid artistic approach. Barry’s opera, based on Lewis Carroll’s *Alice in Wonderland* and *Through the Looking Glass*, is noted for its challenging, theatrical vocal style and imaginative score, while Chavaz emphasizes engaging audiences with innovative programming beyond traditional expectations. The theatre’s broader artistic vision includes commissioning new works and fostering adventurous collaborations, aiming to sustain cultural vitality in the East German city.
