Abstract

This article focuses on a pilot study examining the effects of Reiki, a complementary energy healing therapy, on stress among Japanese nurses. Using a mixed-methods intervention design with 21 nurse participants, the study found that Reiki significantly improved psychological stress responses—measured by mood state assessments—while no significant changes were observed in physical stress indicators such as pulse rate or salivary alpha-amylase activity. Qualitative data revealed positive effects including feelings of warmth, relaxation, reduced irritability, and enhanced stress awareness, with no adverse events related to Reiki itself reported. The findings suggest Reiki may be a promising approach for psychological stress management in Japanese nurses and represent an initial step toward integrating holistic nursing care practices in Japan.
