Abstract

The article focuses on Captain John D. Craig's involvement in developing deep-sea diving and photographic equipment for the planned 1937 salvage operation of the RMS Lusitania shipwreck. Craig collaborated with diver Max Gene Nohl and General Electric to create high-powered underwater lamps and a specialized diving dress and helmet designed to operate at the Lusitania's depth of 312 feet. Although the British salvage group Tritonia Corporation intended to proceed with the salvage, World War II delayed approval, and there is no record that Craig and Nohl's equipment was ever used on the wreck. Postwar salvage efforts have recovered some artifacts, but concerns about explosives aboard the ship have limited extensive recovery.
