Abstract

"The Mormon Military Experience: 1838 to the Cold War" is a comprehensive military history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The authors, Sherman L. Fleek and Robert C. Freeman, explore the complex interactions between the church and the military from the 1838 Missouri conflict to the church's opposition to the MX missile deployment in 1981. The book examines how the church's teachings on war guided its members' conduct, the church's military exceptionalism in the nineteenth century, and its mainstream relationship with the military in the twentieth century. While the book is imbalanced in its coverage, it provides a readable summary of the church's war and military experiences and includes an appendix with Medal of Honor citations for twelve Latter-day Saints. It will appeal to general readers and researchers interested in US military history, Utah history, and the history of the Latter-day Saints. [Extracted from the article]
