Abstract

The article focuses on Charles Dickens' visit to pre-Confederation Canada during his 1842 tour of North America, highlighting his experiences and observations in various Canadian cities. Although his time in Canada was relatively brief, lasting about six weeks, it provided him with a respite from his travels in the United States and offered insights into the social and political climate of the region. Dickens noted the aftermath of the rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada, the political tensions in Toronto, and the cultural vibrancy of Montreal, while also reflecting on the natural beauty of Niagara Falls. His travel narrative, *American Notes for General Circulation*, includes only a brief account of his Canadian journey, yet it serves as a historical testament to the period's developments in British North America.
